Opportunities for Extension

Extension

The mutual support system founded by ten women in 1872 inspired our earliest members to consider including women at other universities in Alpha Phi. The beginning of Beta chapter at Northwestern University occurred when three good friends decided they wanted to form a permanent organization that would withstand the coming changes when college days were over. There were four men's fraternities on campus but no women's fraternities. They went to the dean of women to ask her for a Greek dictionary so that they could select a Greek name. Dr. Jane Bancroft was an Alpha Phi from Syracuse University, and she suggested that they apply to join an already established group made up of college women of similar aims and interests.

Today, establishing a new chapter can be a more complex endeavor. If there are sororities on the campus, then those sororities through a vote of college Panhellenic must decide that there is a need for a new group on campus by voting to open for expansion. If there are no sororities on campus, then it is important to know if the university women would welcome the addition of a national sorority.

Alpha Phi is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference, which is the umbrella organization for 26 women's inter/national sororities. This Conference has established some guidelines for expansion on a college campus. There must be approval for a new sorority by the proper authority. The proper authority in most cases is the college Panhellenic on that campus. A local interest group or local sorority must receive the approval of the college Panhellenic before pursuing affiliation with an NPC member group. If you are thinking of starting a new sorority on your campus, you should contact the Extension Committee of National Panhellenic Conference and this committee will answer any questions that you have based on the specifics of the campus under consideration. How does Alpha Phi decide to expand to a campus?
Once a Panhellenic system is officially open for expansion, Alpha Phi looks at a variety of factors including the number of Alpha Phi alumnae in the area who could support the chapter and the financial resources that Alpha Phi would have available at that time.

Who decides whether Alpha Phi will colonize on a new campus?
Once Alpha Phi is invited by the college Panhellenic to make a presentation on campus, then the college Panhellenic determines which group they wish to invite to colonize. Alpha Phi must also have determined that this campus is a good fit for Alpha Phi.

If you are an Alpha Phi alumna or collegian with an interest in a specific university, you may contact the Alpha Phi Executive Office at 847.316.8926. We will be happy to discuss your questions and determine if a specific campus is open for expansion. Alpha Phi welcomes suggestions and insight from alumnae and collegians regarding extension.
