On May 22, 2011, Alpha Phi International Fraternity celebrated the re-installation of its Kappa chapter at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Alpha Phi accepted an invitation to re-colonize in December 2010 from Stanford's Inter Sorority Council.
Installation events began on May 20, 2011, 102 years to the day that Alpha Phi was first established at Stanford. The weekend kicked off with the Court of Ivy ceremony held in Tresidder Student Union on campus. Initiation ensued Saturday, May 21, at the Black Community Services Center, where Alpha Phi welcomed 53 initiates, including 1 alumnae initiate, into the chapter. A successful installation banquet took place the following day at the Stanford Faculty Club on Stanford's campus. Alpha Phi was thrilled to welcome four Stanford administrators, several alumna members of the Kappa chapter and many families of the new initiates. Also present were representatives from the Extension Team, Alpha Phi's International Executive Board and the Pacific Northwest Regional Team. Jenny Holsman (Gamma Pi '96, Arizona State) presented a check for a $1000 donation to the YWCA Support Center on behalf of the Alpha Phi Foundation.
At the banquet, Gretchen Alarcon, a Kappa alumna and 1993 graduate of Stanford, spoke about her Alpha Phi experience as an undergraduate. Kappa's Chapter Advisor Danielle Marganoff (Delta '04, Cornell) says, "After learning about the history of Kappa from so many different sources, it was amazing to hear Gretchen speak. Her stories made the past so much more real for me, and I think they had the same impact on the newest members of this chapter."
Susan Brink Sherratt (Beta Beta '80, Michigan State), Team Lead for Stanford, says it has been a joy watching the chapter come to fruition: "Listening to the charter members' descriptions of what Alpha Phi means to them touched my heart. They truly understand the meaning of sisterhood and embrace Alpha Phi's history and traditions."
Alpha Phi and the Stanford chapter are thankful for the all support throughout the colonization and re-installation process. Congratulations to all alumnae and new initiates of the Kappa chapter!
