Loyola Marymount Chapter Hosts Silent Auction Benefiting Charities

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (ALPHA PHI) Nov. 5, 2004 -- Members of Zeta Beta chapter of Alpha Phi International Fraternity raised over $54,000 at the ninth annual fall A-PHI-ASCO philanthropy event. More than 575 people gathered at the Gersten Pavilion at Loyola Marymount University from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. for dinner, a live auction and a silent auction benefiting the Alpha Phi Foundation and local charity Good Shepherd Shelter.

Of the total amount of funds raised, 60 percent was donated to the Alpha Phi Foundation in support of cardiac care education, prevention and research among women. The remaining 40 percent was donated to the Good Shepherd Shelter, a refuge for victims of domestic violence.

Alpha Phi alumnae, university faculty, and members of various on campus Greek organizations attended the event. Prizes from the live auction included an all-inclusive trip to Mexico, a visit to the set of NBC television's Will and Grace, a trip to Canada and a set of Los Angeles Lakers basketball tickets. Alpha Phi Foundation Director Rebecca Zanatta and Sister Anne Kelly of the Good Shepherd Shelter were guest speakers.

Zeta Beta chapter members have raised almost $60,000 through the A-PHI-ASCO over the last two years. The chapter’s fundraising efforts were recognized last year by both the mayor of Los Angeles and Alpha Phi International, who awarded the chapter with an award of excellence for raising the most money of any Alpha Phi chapter internationally.

Alpha Phi International Fraternity was founded at Syracuse University in 1872 as one of the first Greek societies for women. Alpha Phi is dedicated to promoting sisterhood, cultivating leadership, encouraging intellectual curiosity and advocating service. The organization is comprised of more than 140 collegiate chapters and more than 130 alumnae chapters throughout the United States and Canada. The Alpha Phi Foundation is the fraternity’s philanthropic and educational partner. Through contributions from chapters, individual members and friends, the foundation supports women’s cardiac health and other charitable and educational projects. Together, Alpha Phi International Fraternity and Foundation develop character for a lifetime.
