NORTH TEXAS, TEXAS
– Members from the University of North Texas (Gamma Eta) collegiate
chapter, Forth Worth and Dallas alumnae chapters of Alpha Phi
International Fraternity will take the place of Texas National
Guard volunteers for a Santa’s Helpers toy drive campaign this holiday
season. The Texas National Guard usually volunteers 30 of its members to
the efforts. However, the war overseas has kept guard members busy
training at bases like Fort Hood in preparation for a January 2005
deployment to Iraq.
"We realize they
are out there serving our country - fighting for us - so if we can do
something in return to help them, that's a great thing," said Betty Jo
Fuller, a member of the Far North Dallas and Surrounding Counties
alumnae chapter,
in a recent WFAA-TV Dallas/Fort Worth,
Texas, news report.
Gamma Eta chapter will
provide about 100 volunteers this year to aid in picking up, sorting and
delivering thousands of donated toys before the holidays. Last year the
chapter provided 30 volunteers.
The Santa’s Helpers
campaign, run by WFAA-TV, has collected holiday toys for
children throughout the Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas, region for the past 30
years. Last year’s campaign provided more than 75,000 toys to almost
50,000 needy children.
