Podcasts are audio and video programs that you can enjoy, for free, on your computer or iPod (or other digital media player).
There are thousands of programs available to listeners and anything that might interest you is probably already in podcast form: learn a foreign language, study American history, train to run, brush up on world religions, learn to get organized, find good recipes and more!
Many TV shows, authors and stars, including This American Life, Oprah and CNN, have their own podcasts. Universities like Yale and Cambridge are jumping on the bandwagon now and offering college lectures as a podcast (sorry, you can't get your degree from a podcast! Yet...)
Anyone with a computer can download podcasts. The easiest and most popular tool for downloading them is through iTunes. Simply visit www.itunes.com to download the iTunes media player (it's free). After you have installed it, open the program and select the iTunes Store link on the left hand side of the player. From there, you will be able to view the library of podcasts available and download them to your computer! If you have an iPod or other digital media player, you should be able to copy the files so that you can take your podcasts anywhere!
